NKiru Books was a Brooklyn bookstore that Mos Def and Talib Kweli frequented and eventually purchased after releasing their classic album “Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star.”

Columbus, Ohio-based producerJ. Rawls uploaded this live version of an unreleased Mos Def/Mr. Man song because Rawls is releasing his final solo album The Legacy and he wanted to share where he has been at. Rawls wrote about this “God Made the Stars” clip he shared:
“I need you to feel the same way I did when I first witnessed this. This made me feel like I was witnessing HIP HOP. This is how I met Mos Def, 1997 in Nkiru Books Brooklyn. Singing what is probably one of my favorite songs that y’all will never be able to hear. When you see These clips, you will understand what Hip Hop is.”

Obviously after meeting Mos Def J-Rawls went on to produce “Brown Skin Lady” for Mos Def and Talib Kweli’s “Black Star” album.
