Video: TATS Cru, TuffCity, & the Seventh Letter are Locked In – Rikers Island, 2013
TAT’S CREW * TUFF CITY * SEVENTH LETTER Locked In: Rikers Island 2013 from NYCStreetPhotography on Vimeo.
For most graffiti writers jail is a place to be avoided at all costs, but that is exactly where members of Tuff City, TATS Cru, and The Seventh Letter recently went to showcase their skills. Crossing deep into enemy lines, the crews headed up to Rikers Island to rock a wall within the notorious facility.
This is the second time that Tuff City and TATS have made the Rikers trip to piece the handball court, and the first trip for members of the Seventh Letter. The addition of the West Coast crew added a new flavor to the production and created a striking blend of styles across the entire wall. This is in part due to the shared design process of CES and RIME that allowed each artist to do their thing without a single member standing above the rest.
It must be a surreal feeling to paint a piece in a place where many of the writers have been sent to for doing the same thing. It is proof that life can really come full circle, and that just because you are down, doesn’t mean you should count yourself out. The mural will be a reminder of just that for the artistic inmates of Rikers, as well as a refreshing burst of color in a place entirely absent of beauty.
