Video: Today is American Censorship Day
PROTECT IP Act Breaks The Internet from Fight for the Future on Vimeo.
Today is November 16th, otherwise known as American Censorship Day, and could be a turning point for the Internet, and free speech around the world. According to AmericanCensorship.org, today the American congress is discussing legislation to build a legal structure for Internet censorship. The US Government would have the power to block, fine, and jail private Internet users for copyright infringements. Pages like Facebook, Tumblr, and the 12ozProphet, who’s users have free reign on the information they post, would be subject to a strict set of laws if their users don’t abide by the rules. This could essentially affect all of social media and threaten free speech on the web. This type of legislation is common in countries like China, which has the world’s largest and most sophisticated Internet censorship system on the planet.
One of the bills being discussed deals with PROTECT-IP, which is explained in the video above. Stay tuned on what happens with this legislation, as it will affect all of our lives in a direct way and set the tone for what the Government will be allowed to do in the future.
