Authors of the Piecebook series Sacha Jenkins and David Villorente just released this video where they talk to some of the graffiti writers featured in their latest book about the significance of blackbooks in graffiti culture. Featured artists include Erni “Paze” Valez, SP.One, Ewok, Rime, Wane, Pez (from Barcelona), and How & Nosm.
Each artist’s work is very different and they each have a different perspective when it comes to their blackbook. Rime acknoledges that while painting his famous 50-character mural, that he only sketch 12 of the characters in advance and says “as I get older I realize the importance of sketching… Doing your homework before you go to school is good.” How and Nosm, on the other hand, say they always prepare sketches before tackling the large scale murals they’ve been painting. After the work is complete they tape the sketches into a blackbook to keep them all together.
The World Piecebook features nearly 200 private drawings from top graffiti artists that are located all over the globe. The book is published by Prestel and available now on Amazon. This video was presented by Reebok Classics. Stay tuned for part 2 coming next week.
