Video: Gil Scott Heron x Chris Cunningham

By - Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Been feeling this video remix by director Chris Cunningham (Apex Twin and Bjork) of Gil Scott Heron’s (RIP) blues song “New York Is Killing Me.” I turned to my girl on the train the other day and said, “I feel like I’m spending all my time underground on the train.” She looked at me and smirked that smile she gives me when she tires of hearing my regular twice a week complaint. The only person speaking my language right now is Gil Scott Heron.
”Yeah I need to be back home, need to be back home,
need to be back home, need to be back home yeah, born in Chicago but I go home Tennessee.” Cunningham’s first video in four years mixes Heron’s haunting lyrics with the director’s ominous visuals for a beautiful depiction of the eerie isolation only the NYC subway can evoke. -Cosbe
